My current book is Bedlam’s Edge, edited by Mercedes Lackey and Rosemary Edghill.

It is a collection of short stories by a variety of different authors, set in Lackey’s Bedlam’s Bard universe (which I’ve loved since I encountered it while devouring the Science Fiction collection at the university where I did my undergrad).

Somehow, I’d missed this collection when it was published in 2005 and stumbled on it while testing a new feature in our libraries’ online catalogue. Yay for random discoveries 🙂

Before Green Gables by Budge Wilson

Last night (later than I should have, given that it was a week night), I finished reading Before Green Gables, Budge Wilson‘s authorized prequel to L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables series. This is not a book I ever intended to read. I’m not a fan of authorized sequels or prequels to the works of dead authors. However, I read an article highlighting the book in the Dalhousie alumni magazine and was intrigued.

I enjoyed the book. It did seem more suited to a slightly older audience than the original works, so I would definitely recommend that this book be read after the original eight books, rather than before them.

Farthing by Jo Walton

While I was home for the New Brunswick Day long weekend, I read Jo Walton’s alternative history Farthing. This is a classic English country house murder mystery, but set in an alternate England that, instead of pressing the war against Hitler, settled a truce instead. It was a compelling, addictive read. Saying I enjoyed it would not be the right words, but I fully intend to pick up the sequel, Ha’penny, at the earliest opportunity.

Moving Pictures (Discworld ; book 10) by Terry Pratchett

This weekend, I finished reading Moving Pictures by Terry Pratchett. In this book, the tenth of the Discword series, Pratchett takes on Hollywood and the movie industry. It’s a wonderful, fun read (as if Pratchett writes anything that isn’t fabulous). But I want more Sam Vimes …

Still, this was great and I recommend it.

FictionDB

I have a new favourite site (not most-favourite, but still a favourite :)): FictionDB, a free reader’s advisory tool. I’ve only poked around with it for a few moments, but have already found two forthcoming books that had to be added to my Amazon.ca wishlist!

No Future For You (Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight, Volume 2)

I just finished reading No Future for You (ISBN: 9781593079635), the second volume in the graphic novel series Buffy the Vampire Series, Season Eight. I was very impressed with this volume, as I was with the first. The stories and characterization are remarkable and the artwork is incredible.

I recommend this book.
